That formed the basis of the design and it grew from there. I came across a shelf slider – actually designed for heavy duty containers and shelves such as the drawers for equipment on fire engines. Research began for perhaps my most ambitious project since the creation of the Flight Room itself! I needed to create approximately 400mm of additional space to get to the ‘minimum recommended play area’. The first problem though was that the simulator took up so much space in the Flight Room that is was not practical to use the Oculus for any other virtual reality programme it could deliver.

This would set me off on a whole new path of discovery, as I explored how it could also work with the simulator. In March 2016 the Oculus Virtual Reality headset was launched and I could not wait to try it. I also refreshed the windscreen base to match using a special fabric paint, Rust-Oleum. Refreshed simulator, replacing the wood effect I have covered it now in stick back vinyl and replaced the chrome edging by sealing with a black silicone sealant. I also decided to refresh the covering on the base of the simulator as I did not like the wood finish. For X-Plane in particular, I am confident that the processor had been the bottle neck holding back the frame rates. The difference is amazing with a much more fluid simulator in both Prepar3D and X-plane 11. The three screens have proven to be a challenge for the processor and the graphics card.
